Christmas
Bird Count: On a surprisingly mild and
pleasant Saturday in December, more than 50 volunteers in a dozen
teams counted the number and species of birds they observed within
the 15-mile diameter Kitsap Christmas Bird Count circle. Their final
tally, combined with the observations of backyard counters on the
same day, is shown on the facing page. Kitsap Audubon was founded in
1974, and has been faithfully conducting this annual bird census for
35 years! The Christmas Bird Count started in 1900 when a group of
birdwatchers, led by ornithologist Frank Chapman, decided to replace
the annual Christmas bird shoot with a nonlethal count. Until then,
hunters competed to see who could shoot the most birds in one day.
Today National Audubon sponsors more than 2000 count circles
throughout the Western Hemisphere. The data collected is used to
monitor population trends, and is available on the National Audubon
website. Kitsap Audubon is indebted to our many devoted volunteers
for yet another successful Christmas Bird Count.
