For the 2007 CBC:
Volunteers took part in a
108-year-old tradition that involve some 55,000
volunteers throughout the western hemisphere. The Kitsap Audubon
Society has been conducting these
annual surveys since 1977. The CBC started on Christmas day 1900,
when a group of 27 conservationists came up with an alternative to
the traditional “side hunt,” which consisted of seeing who could
shoot the most birds and small animals in a single day. The group
chose instead to identify, count and record the birds they saw.
These annual counts have become an important database for monitoring
migration patterns, population trends and the status of threatened
species. Those who aren’t able to take part in a field count can sign
up for a yard count. This involves counting the birds that visit
your own yard on the day of the count. Coordinators for the yard
count are Hans and Dawn Hansen of Seabeck. Call them at
360-830-5222.
