Winter Sightings: Wildlife Sightings by Joan Carson Townsend’s warblers and Anna’s hummingbirds are adding some color to our yards and action out on the water seems good too. Lots of reports to catch up on. Next deadline is Feb. 14. November: 11/14, Brad W., Jefferson Head, 1 “late” parasitic jaeger. 11/14, Carson yard, Poulsbo, 3 Anna’s, 3 Townsend’s warblers, 1 Hutton’s vireo. 11/16, Kathy Swartz, Pt. Orchard-Southworth area, 5 band-tailed pigeons, 1 ringnecked pheasant (m). 11/16, Brad W., Weaver Rd., B.I., 1 adult greater white-fronted goose. 11/, Brad W., Skiff Pt., B.I., 3 ancient murrelets. 11/19 & 20, Peggy Roney, Seabeck area, 2 cackling geese in with Canada geese. They hang out on the school field, conference grounds and Nick’s lagoon. Two weeks earlier, she had 2 white swans. 11/ 25, Brad W., W. Kingston, 57 longbilled dowitchers, Fort Ward, B.I., 1 white-throated sparrow. 11/27, John Finkbeiner, Theler Wetlands, adult Northern shrike. 11/ 29, Deanna Travis, Oak Bay Park, Olympic Peninsula, 21 brant geese. December: 12/1, Charlotte Blytmann, north of Poulsbo, 1 Anna’s hummingbird (m). 12/4, Brad Waggoner, B.I., has varied thrush in his yard. Carsons heard their first one same date. He’s had his for some time. 12/6, Brad W., 12 late Heermann’s gulls off Restoration Pt., B.I., 1 Northern harrier. 12/7, Deborah Rudnick, B.I., reported a report of a cougar on the Island, lower Derby Downs, just above Woodward Creek/Meigs area. 12/8, Evergreen Park, Bremerton, 10 Eurasian wigeons in with 500 American. 12/9, Chris & Holly Hunt (360-475-8292) would like info from anyone who has birded the Dickerson Creek Watershed west of Kitsap Lake. 12/9, Barbara Wilhite, Silverdale, red-tailed hawk.12/11, Brad W., Kitsap Lake, 590 ruddy ducks and one merlin. 12/11, Kathy Swartz, Harper Pier (Pt. Orchard area) several Northern shovelers and several pair green-winged teal. 12/12, Ed & Charlotte Roe, Anderson Landing, have Anna’s hummingbirds; hundreds of wigeon (1 Eurasian so far) scoters, mergansers, buffleheads; couple of different grebes but no Westerns. Have a new, easy-to-see bald eagle nest. 12/12, Jamie Acker, owling on B.I., (32 degrees) 3 barred owls, 1 barn owl, 4 Northern sawwhet owls. 12/18, Brad W., B.I. Boat trip, 4 Clark’s grebes total in several Western grebe flocks. Also 1 yellowbilled loon near Jefferson Head and 10 ancient murrelets near Skiff Point. 12/19, Tim Cline, Seabeck, 2 Anna’s hummingbirds. 12/19, Kathy Swartz, Pt. Orchard, nice photo of a red-breasted sapsucker and a pileated w.p. on the same cedar tree at the same time. 12/19, Brad W., KAS CBC Area 2 (W. Bremerton) highlights w. Doug Watkins, 1 dipper at Jarstad Park, 1 ring-billed gull at Naval Hospital, 3 W. Scrub jays in west Bremerton, 9 least sandpipers mouth of Chico Creek. Same day, 1 American kestrel going to roost at barn on the Clear Creek Trails.12/20, Jamie Acker, B.I. Owling in the rain, 1 barn owl, 1 barred, 1 Northern sawwhet, all within 45 minutes of one another. 12/20, Tim Cline, Priddy Vista Rd. Toward Scenic Beach Park, 5+ Mountain quail; 30-40 crows mobbing 2 ravens. 12/22, Connie Bickerton, B.I., was told that a male cardinal was seen on northern B.I., or in the Poulsbo area. Her son who was told about it wasn’t sure where the person lived. 12/23, Tim Cline, fishing Seabeck area, 2 juv. Dall’s porpoises, 2 eared grebes. 12/24, Scenic Beach Park, 2 California sea lions, mix of 163 ducks - wigeon, mallard, goldeneye, scoter and bufflehead, pr. Killdeer. 12/27, Jamie, B.I., owling for CBC and a “Big Day” count, 6 Northern saw-whet, 3 barred, 1 great horned owl. January: 01/2, Charlotte Blytmann, Breidablik area north of Poulsbo, 1 Anna’s hummer (f.), 2 Townsend’s warblers (m.f.). 1/3, Brad W., Fort Ward, B.I., 150 cedar waxwings. 1/7, Ian Paulsen, B.I., Manzanita Bay, 1 eared grebe and a white-winged scoter with a white head & back. End of Hidden Cove Rd., 12 long-tailed ducks. He said there was a large flock off Keyport. 1/9, Ian Paulsen, Fort Ward, B.I., pelagic cormorant, black scoter, harlequin duck, spotted sandpiper, Townsend’s chipmunk. Great reporting, winter weather or not. Aloha! Common on the east coast, Herring Gulls are seen occassionally in Kitsap County.
