Kitsap Audubon at the Port Gamble North Gateway Opening!
What a spectacular day for community and conservation! Kitsap Audubon was thrilled to participate in the recent celebration marking the official opening of the new North Gateway at Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park. This incredible project expands local access to one of our region’s most treasured natural landscapes, and our team was out in full force to welcome visitors, connect with friends, and celebrate the wildlife that calls this habitat home.
Exploring the Trails
For those looking to dive straight into the natural wonders of the park, Kitsap Audubon’s Kevin Eyer led an engaging, educational nature walk. Participants eagerly joined, looking upward and listening closely as Kevin shared insights into the local bird populations and the vital ecosystems protected within the park’s boundaries. It was a wonderful opportunity to see the community connecting directly with the land we all work so hard to preserve.

Connecting at the Table
Beyond sharing our passion for birds with the public, Justin and Lynn spent valuable time conversing with fellow local environmental groups. This event served as a beautiful reminder of how interconnected our efforts are. Protecting Kitsap’s natural heritage thrives on this kind of robust collaboration, and we were honored to share ideas with our peers in the conservation community.
We were also delighted to see familiar faces doing incredible work: Don and Judy Willott were in attendance, warmly representing several local non-profit organizations and continuing their long-standing dedication to regional advocacy and community building.

Honors and Hard Work
The opening ceremony featured inspiring remarks that underscored just how much collaborative effort went into making this gateway a reality.
Kitsap County Commissioner Christine Rolfes kicked off the event, speaking passionately about the immense, dedicated hard work required by countless individuals and organizations to reach this milestone. Kitsap Parks Director Alex Wisniewski also took the stage, speaking on the long-term vision of the opening of the gateway and how it enhances accessibility, recreation, and habitat appreciation for all county residents.
Looking Ahead
The North Gateway represents more than just parking stalls and new amenities; it is a true gateway to nature, fostering a deeper public relationship with our environment.
A massive thank you to everyone who stopped by the Kitsap Audubon table, joined Kevin's walk, or lent their hands to this monumental project. We look forward to seeing you all out on the trails!
