Monthly Field Trip to Bill Frank Jr- Nisqually NWR
Join Us for a Birding Adventure at Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually NWR!
Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 7th and enjoy a long half-day exploring one of the region’s most beloved spring birding locations! Led by Al & Carolyn Westphal, we’ll walk the boardwalk and forest trails in search of nesting field and forest birds, summer waterfowl, and—if we’re lucky—a few shorebirds too!
This trip involves several miles of easy walking on flat, well-maintained trails. It’s a fantastic opportunity to experience the rich biodiversity of the Nisqually delta and enjoy a peaceful morning in nature.

Monthly Field Trip - Theler Wetlands, Belfair
🌿 Spring is calling and so are the birds! 🌿
Join Al & Carolyn Westphal on Saturday, May 17 for a half-day birding adventure at the beautiful Theler Wetlands and Trails in Belfair! 🐦
This annual spring favorite is the perfect way to welcome seasonal migrants like swallows, sparrows, warblers, and vireos—plus catch up with the year-round locals. We’ll spend the morning walking several miles of well-maintained trails and boardwalks (including one short, moderately steep section).

City Nature Challenge and Plant Sale
Participants in the 2025 City Nature Challenge will observe various species of mosses, birds, amphibians and fungi while deepening their understanding of biodiversity of Bloedel Reserve.
Kitsap Audubon volunteers will lead a group along trails at Bloedel as a fantastic wrap up to the City Nature Challenge. There are many other activities happening that day as well.

Bioblitz 2025: City Nature Challenge - Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park
Let’s go Kitsap County! With your help, we will make the most observations of species, and deepen our understanding of the biodiversity of our neighborhoods, parks and shorelines.

Kitsap Audubon Society welcomes the LGBTQ+ community and allies to a Let’s Go Birding Together walk to learn about birds and birding starting at Etta Turner Park and walking Port Orchard waterfront. Birding walks should allow everyone to experience the joys of nature in a safe, affirming, and inclusive space. All experience levels are welcome, from those who are brand-new to birding and want to learn more to those who have been birding for years. All ages are also welcome. Allies, friends, and family are also welcome to participate.
From 10 to 12, we will walk the Port Orchard Waterfront, possibly find a place to get coffee, and finish up back at Etta Turner Park. For those interested in more birding we can travel to Yukon Harbor and Harper Pier for more sightings.

Field Trip - Bremerton's Lions Park - Family Oriented
Join us for a family-oriented field trip in Bremerton’s Lions Park on March 15th from 10:00 -12:00 pm. The park is an ideal place for a birding field trip for kids and toddlers, with good bathrooms, accessible paved trails, a good-sized playset and a rocky beach, which should be good for exploring. Low tide is 11:17 a.m., so we may have good crustacean sightings to go with the bird sightings!

Field Trip - Point No Point in Hansville, WA
Point No Point in Hansville - late-winter Birding, Saturday, March 15th (half-day). Al & Carolyn Westphal, leaders (westphalac@aol.com). An opportunity for a late-winter visit to one of Kitsap County’s premier birding areas, and a chance to see some of our winter seabird visitors transitioning into their breeding plumage. Other possibilities include sparrows, finches, raptors and others. Because the parking at Point No Point remains closed, this event will involve several miles of leisurely walking along beach, good trail, and roadways (all flat). Email trip leaders to sign up

Birds of Kitsap County: presented by Poulsbo Library

Avid birder and nature photographer Janine Schutt will deliver a photographic presentation featuring the birds we see in our local environment. Janine is a past president of Kitsap Audubon Society, the 2016 recipient of KAS’s Kingfisher Award, and is co-organizer of the annual Christmas Bird Count. Since 2018, Janine has been the bird columnist for the bi-monthly West Sound magazine.
This presentation will also include information about our region’s habitat variety and most reliable and accessible birding hotspots. It will also help us identify the calls we hear from our feathered friends.

Walk & Talk: Great Backyard Bird Count w/ GPC & KAS
Join Kevin Eyer, Co-President of the Kitsap Audubon Society and GPC for a Walk & Talk through the scenic Hansville Greenway and Hansville Greenway Highlands! As we explore, you’ll learn about local conservation efforts while participating in the 2025 Great Backyard Bird Count, a global citizen science initiative that engages thousands of bird enthusiasts worldwide. During this fun and informative Walk & Talk, we’ll count birds and document species diversity, contributing our observations to birdcount.org to help create a real-time snapshot of bird populations.
Whether you’re a beginning birder or an experienced observer, your participation matters – your counts will help scientists better understand and protect birds while connecting you to the natural beauty of the Hansville Greenway and Hansville Greenway Highlands. Be sure to bring your binocs!
We will walk about 1.5 miles along various surfaces, including a section with an incline.
Bring weather appropriate layers, a water bottle, and comfortable hiking shoes.
