Veteran’s Day Thoughts: Your Next Mission

For twenty-one years, serving my country provided a profound and unwavering purpose, instilling a deep sense of pride. But once my time in uniform concluded, I faced the challenge common to many veterans: finding the next mission. I searched for a cause that could reignite that sense of commitment, and I unexpectedly found it in the world of bird conservation. What started as a fun, relaxing way to track the beautiful species I was seeing during my hikes quickly evolved. The more I learned about the importance of these creatures and the challenges they face, the clearer my new purpose became. This is more than a hobby; it is a higher cause, requiring the same dedication, vigilance, and commitment honed during my years of military service.

To my fellow veterans, I know you understand the profound need for service. The skills we developed—discipline, leadership, and perseverance—are transferable and needed in every aspect of civilian life, including the protection of our natural world. Standing up for vulnerable species and preserving their habitat now feels like a direct, meaningful extension of the duty I once held. If you are still seeking that next goal, I hope you find the mission that resonates with you. Whether it's through community service, conservation, or something else entirely, there is a cause out there waiting for your passion and expertise.
