KAS NextGen Birders: A Sunny Launch and a Bright Future

On a crisp, sun-drenched afternoon in Silverdale, sixteen young birders gathered at the Clear Creek Trail to kick off the inaugural KAS NextGen Birders field trip. The energy was high from the start, signaled by an early appearance from a Rufous Hummingbird—one of the very first spring arrivals to touch down in Kitsap County this year.

The afternoon was a perfect blend of birding and community. Between bouts of laughter and the collective challenge of identifying waterfowl against the glowing evening sun, the group was treated to some stellar sightings:

  • Red-breasted Sapsucker: A fantastic, close-up look that delighted the crowd.

  • Virginia Rail: While it stayed tucked deep within the marsh, its distinctive, rattling calls provided a thrilling soundtrack to the walk.

From the Trail to the Taproom

The adventure didn't end at the trailhead. Afterward, the group migrated to Moment Brewing to swap stories over a round of drinks. It was a great chance to dig deeper into everyone’s backgrounds, passions, and shared love for the Pacific Northwest.

Bridging the Gap

The sheer excitement of the day was a powerful reminder of why this group exists. While birding is exploding in popularity among younger generations, there has historically been a "participation gap" within established conservation organizations like Kitsap Audubon.

KAS NextGen Birders is here to change that. Our mission is to build a vibrant home for young birders, nature enthusiasts, and emerging conservation professionals right here on the Kitsap Peninsula.

Our next outing is right around the corner, May 2nd —we’re just getting started!
