What is the Kitsap Audubon Solstice Challenge?
The summer solstice brings the longest day of the year, giving us maximum daylight to celebrate the incredible biodiversity right here in our backyards! This year, we are challenging our community to get outside and participate in a friendly community-science competition.
Our goal? To see who can record the highest number of unique bird species in Kitsap County on the solstice! Whether you are a seasoned birder with a high-powered spotting scope or a beginner looking out your kitchen window, every single observation counts. By uploading your sightings, you'll help build a snapshot of Kitsap’s bird population during peak summer and contribute valuable data to local community science!
How to Participate:
1. Join the Project: Head over to iNaturalist and join our official project page: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/kitsap-solstice-2026
2. Get Outside on June 21st: Explore your favorite local trail, visit a beach, or hang out in your backyard anytime on Sunday, June 21st.
3. Snap and Log: When you see or hear a bird, take a photo or record its sound using the iNaturalist app.
4. Automatic Upload: Any bird observations made within Kitsap County on June 21st will automatically be pulled into our project group.
Keep an eye on the leaderboard to see how many species our community can log together!
