Celebrating the Heart of Kitsap Audubon: Honoring Volunteers Michael Szerlog and Kevin Eyer
At the Kitsap Audubon Society, we are proud to be an all-volunteer organization. Everything we do—from supporting local conservation efforts to leading educational field trips—is powered entirely by the passion and dedication of our community. Simply put, if it wasn’t for the incredible dedication of our volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to do the things we do.
At our May membership meeting, we had the privilege of honoring two outstanding individuals whose tireless efforts have shaped our organization for years: Michael Szerlog and Kevin Eyer.
Michael Szerlog – Lifetime Achievement Award
For over 30 years, Michael has been a cornerstone of Kitsap Audubon. Back in 1995, he helped start our purple martin nest box program. In 2001, he took over as our web manager, and for the last 25 years, he has worked behind the scenes to build and maintain our dynamic virtual face—even entirely rebuilding our website on Squarespace in 2016 to give us the professional digital home we have today.
Beyond Audubon, Michael serves as the president of the Hansville Greenway Association, helping protect 100 acres of local wildlife corridors. Recently retired from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Michael lives in Hansville with his wife Jennifer, where he continues to enjoy backyard birding and local hikes. We are endlessly grateful for his decades of service!
Kevin Eyer – 2026 Kingfisher Award
The Kingfisher Award recognizes individuals who have given outstanding service to Kitsap Audubon for five years or more, and Kevin truly embodies this spirit. Since joining our board in 2021, Kevin has served as Vice President, Conservation Co-Chair, and Co-President, and was just elected to another term as President starting July 1st. From leading climate surveys at Bloedel Reserve to building partnerships with local libraries and conservation groups, Kevin’s leadership has been dynamic and inspiring.
When he isn’t volunteering with us, Kevin is a science teacher at North Kitsap High School, where he advises the student AWE (Astronomy, Wildlife & Engineering) Club. He has actively connected the next generation to conservation by involving his students in the Poulsbo Christmas Bird Counts and local nest box projects. Kevin lives in Poulsbo with his wife Lauren and their two sons.
To Michael, Kevin, and the dozens of other volunteers who keep our mission flying high—thank you. You are the heart and soul of Kitsap Audubon!
