Community Celebration: Kitsap Audubon at the Juneteenth Freedom Festival
There is something truly special about a summer day in the Pacific Northwest when the community comes together. On Saturday, June 13th, the Kitsap Audubon Society had the privilege of participating in the Juneteenth Freedom Festival & The People's March at Evergreen Rotary Park.
It was a gorgeous, sun-soaked 83-degree day—the kind of perfect summer afternoon that brings out the very best of our local community. From the inspiring steps of The People's March starting at the Norm Dicks Government Center to the lively festival grounds, the atmosphere was absolutely electric. The air was filled with incredible live music, the enticing aroma of free community food, and a shared spirit of unity and reflection.
Connecting Through Conservation
Representing Kitsap Audubon at our outreach table were Justin Carrington, Lynn Willmott, and Sandy & Gene Bullock. They spent the day chatting with attendees, handing out information, and sharing our passion for local bird species and habitat conservation.
Tabling at events like the Juneteenth Freedom Festival is at the core of what we do. It gives us a unique opportunity to steps outside of our usual circles and reach people we might not otherwise cross paths with. Whether introducing a family to the joy of backyard birding, talking about the importance of protecting local wetlands, or sharing details about our upcoming program calendar, these face-to-face interactions build lasting bridges.
Supporting Our Local Partners
Beyond sharing our mission, events like this allow us to show up for and celebrate the critical local organizations, black-owned businesses, and community leaders who make Kitsap County such a vibrant place to live. Conservation doesn't happen in a vacuum—it thrives when a diverse, interconnected community stands together.
We walked away from the festival feeling inspired, energized, and deeply grateful for the conversations we had.
A massive thank you to the event volunteer Coordinator Shay, everyone who stopped by our table to say hello, and to Justin, Lynn, Sandy, and Gene for volunteering their time on such a warm afternoon to represent our chapter!
