Summer Solstice Magic: Great Company & Birding at Clear Creek Trails

There is no better way to welcome the summer solstice than being out in nature as the world wakes up. Early this morning, a small but mighty group of birders hit the trails at Clear Creek for our special Let’s Go Birding Together (LGBT) walk.

Led by Chris, the crew—including Chance, Beth, Lindy, and Kelleen—set off at 7:15 AM. By the time the walk wrapped up at 9:40 AM, just as the summer sun was starting to heat up, the group had shared incredible stories, connected over a mutual love for the Pacific Northwest, and logged some truly fantastic sightings.

The Solstice Sightings: 33 Species!

Our sharp-eyed group managed to record an impressive 33 species during the morning stroll.

While Chris had been scouting the area on Friday and Saturday and was a little bummed that a resident Virginia Rail decided to play hooky this morning, the local wildlife more than made up for it!

Morning Highlights

  • The Sapsucker Show: A gorgeous Red-breasted Sapsucker—including a very cooperative juvenile—visited with the group, completely stealing the show and making up for the missing rail.

  • Baby Season is in Full Swing: The wetlands were bursting with new life! The group was treated to adorable Wood Duck and Mallard ducklings peeking out of the reeds to say hello.

  • Bionic Eyes at the Nesting Cavity: The crew spent some time watching an active Downy Woodpecker nesting cavity. The local dog walkers passing by were thoroughly impressed by the group's "bionic eyes" and spotting skills!

  • A Rufous Tour Guide: A vibrant Rufous Hummingbird put on a display, practically showing the group exactly where the best morning flowers were hiding.

Community in Nature

Beyond the birds, the true highlight of the morning was the wonderful community spirit. The slower pace allowed for plenty of stops to share personal stories of the natural world and reflect on how fortunate we are to live in such a beautiful region.

A huge thank you to Chris for leading, and to Chance, Beth, Lindy, and Kelleen for bringing such great energy to the trail.

Missed this walk? Our community is always growing! Check out our upcoming event calendar to join the next Kitsap Audubon field trip.
